The Siegel High School Band welcomes rising 9th graders, transfer students, and their families, as well as returning band members and their families, to the 2012-13 season.

An informational session for parents new to the band will be held Monday, May 14th, in the band room. Handbooks and required forms will be available at the session, but are also available by request - just call or email the directors (contact info here).

Handbooks and forms are being sent home with current band members soon, and forms will also be available online soon.

Forms and the initial $150 band camp deposit are due back to the band room by May 16th.

Color guard practice and audition dates

For those interested in auditioning for the 2012-2013 Siegel Band Color Guard, practice sessions to learn basic flag routines will be held on the following dates immediately after school until 5:15 PM:

May 8, 10, 14, 15 and 17

Auditions themselves will be May 18th after school.

Students should wear t-shirt and shorts or sweatpants, socks and tennis shoes. Bring a water bottle and report to the Siegel High band room.

Students, please remember to submit your reservation for "A Celebration of Fire and Ice" to be held Saturday, April 14 at Maney Hall at Oaklands Mansion. We need your reservation in order to plan for food by this Friday. But don't wait, we need them asap. Check your email for the reservation form.

Except for percussionists who might need their uniform, all others should return their CLEAN marching uniform. Thank you for those that have already turned theirs in.

Remember that photos of seniors are due 3/30.

We will be sending an email with students' current financial status. We appreciate everyone financially supporting your band program.

Senior Photos for Awards and Recognition Night Due March 30th

Seniors and senior parents! It's time to get out those old photos of childhood days for the senior slide show at the Spring Concert and Awards.

We need pictures of each current senior throughout his or her life. The slide show is a great part of the evening, and the kids enjoy it as much as the parents.

Pictures are due by Friday, March 30th. There is a box labeled in the band room if you want to bring printed photos, or CDs, or emailing photos is also fine - See complete guidelines and who to contact

Monday, March 12th

Our band will have the privilege of experiencing a performance by the Illinois Wesleyan University. This is open to our parents and families. They will perform at the school March12th:

Performance 1 9am
Performance 2 10 am
Performance 3 11 am

Tuesday, March 13th

We will have a booster club meeting March 13 at 6pm.

Thursday, March 15th

Concert, 6:30 pm

Please return uniforms asap (please make sure they have been cleaned).

Parents, you may bring the uniforms to the booster meeting as well.

Wednesday, April 11th

We are also going to host the very famous Tennessee Tech Tuba Ensemble on April 11 as they travel to perform for TMEA all state the next day. They will perform here at 2:20 pm. They are very entertaining..about 25 players..a lot of jazz. Parents and public are welcome. Should be fun. See more in this post.

Saturday, April 14th

Tennessee Tech Tuba Ensemble to Perform at Siegel

The internationally acclaimed TENNESSEE TECH TUBA ENSEMBLE will perform in a free concert at Siegel High School on Wednesday, April 11th, at 2:20 PM.

The Tennessee Tech Tuba Ensemble is one of if not the most successful performing collegiate ensembles in history. Recognized internationally as the leading group of its kind, the TTTE has an enviable record of twenty-five recording projects, seven Carnegie Hall appearances, two World’s Fairs performances, numerous national and international conference engagements, a forty-five year history of performances from Preservation Hall in New Orleans to the Spoleto Festival in Charleston to the Kennedy Center in Washington and responsible for the composition and arrangement of more music for the tuba than any other single source. Founded in 1967 by R. Winston Morris, the TTTE and Morris established and defined the standards for tuba ensemble performance practices and have inspired the formation of like groups all over the world. The subject of several doctoral dissertations, the TTTE most recently enjoyed wide-spread exposure via a nationally broadcast PBS documentary titled TUBA U: Basso Profundo and the publication by Scarecrow Press of “The Tennessee Tech Tuba Ensemble and R. Winston Morris: a 40th Anniversary Retrospective” by Charles McAdams and Richard Perry.

The performance by the 25-member TTTE is free and open to the public. A wide variety of music will be performed exploring musical styles from baroque music to modern jazz. Of particular interest will be the pieces featuring outstanding soloists from the ensemble. Following a rousing performance of the famous “William Tell Overture” (Lone Ranger theme of course) the ensemble will perform a Vivaldi “Concerto Grosso” originally composed to feature solo violins but in this case will feature Briana Engelbert and Nick Waycaster on euphoniums and Preston Light on tuba with the rest of the ensemble serving as accompaniment. Patrick Curry, principal tubist in the ensemble, will be featured on the famous Spanish flavored “Adagio” by Joaquin Rodrigo. Briana Engelbert, principal euphoniumist, will perform one of the most musically and technically challenging solos ever composed for the euphonium, “Harlequin” by the well-known British composer Phillip Sparke.

Other compositions on the program are original pieces composed especially for the TTTE by composers directly affiliated with Tennessee Tech University. One of the most challenging pieces called “Beast” was composed for the ensemble by TTU professor of composition Dr. Gregory Danner. Several original compositions will be premiered and these will be followed by the very popular Leroy Anderson, “The Irish Washerwoman” featuring various members of the euphonium section. To close the performance, the TTTE will perform a Spanish-Jazz piece titled “One More Time, Chuck Corea” arranged by the ensemble by former member Joe Murphy based on The Singers Unlimited unaccompanied piece by Gene Puerling.

Updates for week of December 5th

Fruit will be delivered this Friday, December 9, at the school.

Citrus will hopefully be delivered around 6 am and we will start sorting as soon as possible after that. If you can be there early to help unload the fruit, please let me know so I can notify you when I get the actual delivery time.

We will also need help between 7 am and 11 am, when we will be inspecting and sorting the fruit. Any amount of time you have available (no matter how short) is always welcome. We will be working in the rear hallway near the band and choir rooms. If you have any hand trucks or push carts, please bring them if you come to help-they are very useful in sorting the fruit and delivering the fruit. Help will also be needed in the afternoon for picking up orders and loading them into cars.

Fruit should be picked up any time between 1 pm and 5 pm on Friday. Please contact Susan Kulp with any questions (see your email for contact info.)

Thanks again for everyone's hard work with this fundraiser!

The Murfreesboro Christmas parade is this Sunday, 12/11.

Students should be dropped off at the MTSU entrance on E Main Street and in place at 1:30pm. The parade starts at 2:00. This is a NEW starting location for the parade. There are other options to get into the campus other than of off E Main so you may want to plan your arrival route.

Please remember to arrive with the complete uniform on and instrument ready, no cases or hat box, etc. We will march down Main St and end around Walnut St, near the Music Stop. Parking will be very limited at the parade start area so make your plans accordingly especially since we do not provide transportation back to the starting point. We are the 3rd band in the parade.

Please remember to NOT bring your instrument cases, hat boxes, etc. to the parade staging area as we have no ability to transport them to the ending parade location.

This Thursday (11/17) the Siegel Band will be recognized by the Rutherford County Commission at the Court House for its success this year.

This Friday (11/18) is first fruit delivery - Just a reminder to everyone that fruit will be delivered this Friday, November 18, at the school.Citrus should be delivered around 6 am and we will start sorting as soon as possible after that. Thanks to everyone who signed up to help. We can always use more help, especially between 7 am and 11 am, when we will be inspecting and sorting the fruit. Schedule for Friday night 11/4

We will be traveling to John Overton High School This Friday (11/4) to support the football team.
The band will NOT be marching, but will be playing.
Students should arrive in uniform at 4:50pm to load the rental truck.
Buses will leave at 5:20pm.
Estimate arrival at Overton at 6:20pm
Game starts at 7:00 pm.
Estimate arrival time back at SHS at 11:15 pm. We will update the website when we are departing Overton.

Important Notes: Students should eat prior to arriving at school to leave for the game.
Overton has advised us that they will be charging for all parents to enter the game, so parents planning on attending the game should be prepared to pay for their own tickets.
Since we are not marching, we are renting a smaller box truck to haul our instruments. We will not be taking the pit, uniform racks, etc.

We have been told that Nashville Fox17 News will play a story "local marching band who moves to the beat of 3 consecutive state championships and their secret to winning" tonight at 9 and 10.

Softball Team Fundraiser Meal Tonight
The SHS softball team will have a pasta dinner and auction tonight. It runs from 5:00-7:00 and there are six varieties of pasta available from Demos', O'Charley's, Gondolier, Applebee's, and Puleo's Grille. The dinner is $5 and includes salad, bread, and dessert.

Fruit order reminder:

Orders for the November 18 delivery are due Friday, October 28. Please include the following in the appropriate 6x9 envelope provided in your fruit packet:

blue tally sheet (this will be returned to you at fruit delivery)
yellow copy of order form
money for all orders (Checks should be made out to Siegel High School Band)

There is a box in Mr. Rhody/Mr. Medford's office to drop the orders in, or the Kulps will also be at the booster meeting Tuesday night if you want to turn your orders in then.

Saturday, 10/22 Schedule, and Other Updates This Week

Here is the schedule for this weekend.

Practice Thursday as normal 3:30 - 6:30

If you ordered CoC tickets and have not picked them up, please see Gary Byers at practice.

Practice Friday 3:30 - 7:00 pm (we are not attending the away football game so we can practice)

Please Note: Students MUST be picked up at MTSU Saturday night after contest is over!

We will take buses from SHS on Saturday to MTSU. The buses will drop us off and leave.

All bands perform during the day in preliminary competition. We perform at 2:45. They will then select the top 8 to return for finals competition after a dinner break. We have reserved an auxiliary gym in Murphy Center to use as a staging area between our performances. Following the announcement of the finalist, the band will go to the auxiliary gym in Murphy Center.

We will serve dinner there and then go to the finals. Only adults who have pre-purchased a meal ticket will be able to eat. We had to know how many people we where going to feed in order to make sure we have enough food.

Although we have a very busy week ahead, Please continue to promote our Fruit Sale! This is a major fund raiser. We need the orders in for the first delivery date by Friday, Oct. 28.

Memphis Bandmaster trip money is due by Tuesday, Oct. 25. Student cost is $40. Parents wishing to reserve a room need to get a check for $95 to Tim.

Tickets are $10 adult for the Bandmaster Competition in Memphis- these tickets are general admission and sold at the box office in Memphis.
